Cautionary advice on tuning

Please think carefully before setting out to go too far with your modifications, if we use the trusty CVH as an example- Ford are one of the largest companies in the world and offered this engine in various states of power output, any increase in? power puts a greater strain on both the engine and other componants,so Fords?may well have added or improved parts to cope with these demands. While the basic CVH may look almost identical to the Rs turbo lump it is NOT- different compression ratio, pistons, valves etc just?for starters.

If you are lucky enough to find that 1 owner RS with 50,000 miles and a totally standard engine it will almost certainly cope well for 20 to 40,000 miles with higher boost, and maybe other mods.If you have a 100,000 miler which is in good running order, you may well be expecting too too much for it to cope with hybrid turbos, performance cams and so on.Certainly expecting it to last for long if you regularly use all? the new power available.

The key to enjoying mods is reliabilty and durability, if you forget this be ready for the big bills when the engine goes bang. The CVH was and is a great light powerful motor. Of course a 120,000 mile motor will explode if you try and make it produce outputs in excess of the 175 ,180 BHP mark, often sooner than you think and with little or sometimes no warnings. If you want big power and for it to last a while start off with checking the basic engine itself, have a compression test done for starters.A properly reconditioned unit will set you back a minimum of ?1500 if yours goes pop.Not a nice bill to get when you have just spent ?1000s on turbos, cams, chips, chargecoolers and so on.?

And the best thing you can do for tuning and performance is treat your car to a full service, we recommend using Ford genuine service items and quality oils, and this does include the fuel filter!!When you see a product advertised with great claims over standard parts ask yourself can this company really do a better job than Fo Mo Co? Most companies naturally invest less in research and dovelopment of their parts than Fords do on the ashtray fitted in your dashboard for example.

If you have any info that you feel may be of use to other owners please let us know and we will post your info, thankyou
